Beautiful Lake Wedowee spills its pure clean waters across 10,666 acres. Construction of Lake Harris, as it is officially known, began in 1974 and was completed in 1982 as an Alabama Power Company reservoir. Lake Wedowee is blessed with lush landscape along its 272 mile shoreline. The lake is fed by the Tallapoosa River and the Little Tallapoosa River and has a maximum depth of 135 feet. Within those shores are vast recreational opportunities in one of the Southeast's best lakes. State and Federal Conservation Services rank Lake Wedowee among the cleanest lakes in this part of the country. Lake Wedowee, or R.L. Harris Reservoir as it is officially known, is considered a mountain lake, with a summer pool elevation of 793 feet with a fluctuation of 8 feet at winter level. Recreation on the lake is plentiful with Large Mouth Bass, Spotted Bass and Crappie living abundantly here to test the skills of the Anglers from near and far. The Alabama Department of Conservation calls Lake Wedowee one of the top three lakes in Alabama for fishing.
Lake Wedowee is considered the baby of Alabama Lakes, considering it was formed a little more than 20 years ago. Before it became a lake, the area was mostly pastureland before Alabama Power Company took it over and made the area what it is today. While the lake is making the surrounding area grow, the rural, natural beauty has been maintained. One of the attractions to Lake Wedowee is Flat Rock Park, which is managed by Alabama Power. Flat Rock, also known as the Blakes Ferry pluton, is granite rock and was formed similarly to Stone Mountain in Georgia. Beginning in early spring, Flat Rock Park is open seven days a week and is perfect for a picnic on the lake. There are fishing and swimming areas as well as pavilions available which may be reserved.
